NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown expressed his disappointment at the All-Star game, and brought up a major problem with the occasion.
On Sunday night, the Vivint Arena in Utah hosted the 2023 NBA All-Star game, which pitted the league’s top players against one another in a highly anticipated annual event. The game served as the conclusion to the All-Star weekend, which included the Rising Stars game, the Celebrity All-Star Game, the NBA Skills Challenge, the 3 Point Contest, and the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
The All-Star game is a highly anticipated event on the basketball calendar, featuring the best NBA players competing against each other or teaming up to showcase their skills to the world. This year’s game was unique in that it featured a draft, with the two captains, West captain LeBron James and East captain Giannis Antetokounmpo, selecting their teams only moments before the game began.
However, the game did not quite live up to its billing as a slow and drab encounter was won by Team Giannis 184-175, courtesy of a game-best performance by the Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum. One of the most in-form players in the league, Tatum put on a record-breaking display as he racked up 55 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists to win the All-Star MVP award, however it was his Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown who made the headlines for his comments on the game.
The Boston Celtics star expressed his unhappiness with the All-Star game and pointed out a major problem with it.
Though Brown did lead the way for Team LeBron as he racked up 35 points and 14 rebounds, he did not shy away from criticizing the occasion. “All is fun in games like this,” Brown said post-game. “Real basketball is different. This was like a layup line. I don’t know how much notoriety we would want to to get from this. This was a glorified lay-up line. We got to figure out how to make the game a little bit more competitive. If the fans like it, that’s all that matters.”
Brown was right in his perspective as the game was not the competitive one that many fans hoped to see, as he hoped that they find a way to make the game more competitive.
