Penny Hardaway spent 14 seasons in the NBA. Starting out in Treadwell High School, he averaged 36.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 3.9 steals, and 2.8 blocks and was named National High School Player of the Year for Parade Magazine. He then went to the University of Memphis but had to sit out his freshman year to academic ineligibility.

There was a point where he got shot in the foot that could have jeopardized his athletic career. He decided to do better in life, improving his grades drastically and getting picked for the 1992 USA Basketball Developmental Team. The team played regularly in scrimmages with the 1992 Olympic Team. Hardaway averaged 22.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 6.4 apg, 2.4 spg, and 1.2 bpg in his junior season and declared for the NBA draft in 1993.

The Golden State Warriors picked him third overall but traded him to Orlando Magic along with three future picks for Chris Webber. The Magic paired Hardaway with the dominant center, Shaquille O’Neal at the time. The former started out as a shooting guard but it soon became clear that he would excel at point. He took over from Scott Skiles and was named in the All-Rookie First Team. Both he and O’Neal paired up to take the Bulls to the NBA Finals where they got swept by the Houston Rockets. Hardaway averaged 25.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 8 assists in the series.

Hardaway’s career peaked in Orlando and during his early days in Phoenix. He was named an All-Star four times, twice in the All-NBA First Team and once in the All-NBA Third Team. In his final years, he played for the Knicks and Heat before hanging up his boots in 2007. In 2015, he chose to start his coaching career at his alma mater and then went back to his college in Memphis to take over from Tubby Smith.
