Fans have come out in numbers to defend the New Orleans Pelicans offering a two-year extension worth $64million for CJ McCollum.

The New Orleans Pelicans have recently offered a two-year-long extension worth $64millikn to CJ McCollum – a piece of news that has polarized opinion in the NBA community on social media. Christian James McCollum who has been in the NBA since being drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in 2013, has signed the deal which will help him earn 64 million over two years.

Born in Canton, Ohio in 1991, McCollom went to Lehigh University for his college years, where his performances in the NCAA saw him being drafted as a first overall pick by the Portland Trailblazers in 2013. After playing for the Trailblazers for nine years, McCollom sought greener pastures elsewhere as he moved on to the New Orleans Pelicans earlier this year.

The NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2016 put in some great performances that saw the Pelicans offer him a two-year extension that will see him earn 64 million over the course of the contract. McCollom put pen to paper on the deal that will take him through the 2025/26 season, and tie McCollum down to the NOLA for four years – helping him earn a whopping $133million.

However, the decision to offer McCollum such extravagant terms have attracted backlash from some supporters while some others have defended the Pelicans’ decision to offer him the deal.

What did the fans have to say about the Pelicans offering CJ McCollum the terms?

While some fans had a problem with McCollum being offered the terms that he was, many defended the decision.

While one fan commented “Great deal for both sides. Cj brings that veteran leadership needed while being that 3rd scorer behind BI and Zion”, another said “$32m per year is nothing for an all star caliber player especially with cap rises coming up” – which might as well be true considering the numbers McCollum has put up in recent seasons.

New Orleans will hope to continue their streak of making the Play-Offs with the extension of one of the important cogs in their machine.
