Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha Curry are frustrated with a situation near their house.
According to reports, Stephen and Ayesha both have raised objection to the proposed establishment of multi-family housing on a property next to his sprawling California mansion.
In an email to the Atherton officials, the Currys’ have told that the three-story townhouses would encroach on their privacy. Notably, Atherton is one of the nation’s most exclusive enclaves.
The Bay Area power couple are mostly vocal about various social justice matters and through the email they have indicated that this objection has made them uneasy.
“We hesitate to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ (literally) rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note before today’s meeting,” the couple wrote. “Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose to live in Atherton.”
Atherton officials will reluctantly submit a plan to the state this week detailing their plans to increase housing density. Also, Atherton is home to tech titans, athletes, and international business titans.
The particular zone in question – which leans on the Curry residence – is proposed to be rezoned in order to accommodate several multi-family units sought by the owner.
“With the density being proposed for 23 Oakwood, there are major concerns in terms of both privacy and safety with three-story townhomes looming directly behind us,” the couple’s email read.
Furthermore, the couple pointed out that the development would just increase density rather than bring more low-income housing to the area.
If the municipal complaint does not work, the Currys asked the town to construct “considerably taller fencing and landscaping to block sight lines onto our family’s property.”
Recently, Curry’s sold their previous Atherton home for $31 million and bought their current 17,000-square-foot spread for $30 million, as per reports.
Other local hotshots – including billionaire investor Marc Andriessen — have previously rallied against introducing more affordable housing into the area.
In Atherton, a median home price of more than $7 million, thus ranking Atherton first on Forbes’ priciest zip code list last year.
