The Milwaukee Bucks superstar is the franchise player for his team having already won one NBA Championship as well as two MVP awards, and is also the key man for the Greek national team who are considered to be one of the strongest national teams in Europe.
So naturally, the “Greek Freak” has an idea about what makes a player great in their field of work – and the 28-year-old gave his thoughts on the subject recently.
The Greek-Nigerian spoke about what makes a player great to SiriusXM while with the Bucks on their pre-season routine.
What makes a player great according to Antetokounmpo?
According to Antetokounmpo, skill is not everything to succeed in the NBA.
When asked if skill is the ultimate prerequisite for guaranteed success in the NBA, Antetokounmpo strongly denied the notion as he said: “It takes more than skills to be great. That’s what people don’t understand. You can be the most skilled person on earth and still don’t make the NBA. The NBA is not about skills. It takes way more than that to succeed.”
When asked about what it takes, Giannis added: “Consistency. LeBron James, 20 years in the league. If you think of the man, you think about consistency – he’s been great for 20 years! Think about MJ – conviction, obsession at getting better! Kobe – obsession! Steph, KD – it’s not just skills. People think it is, but it’s not just skills, you know.”
Antetokounmpo added: “I’m not skillful. I can say I don’t have the best dribble, the best shot – but I believe that I am an underrated passer to make for my teammates, I believe that’s my number one talent. The thing that puts me a step further than most people, is my obsession and my discipline towards the game. Those are my best skills.”
