What did Cam Thomas of the Brooklyn Nets say that got him fined for $40,000?
The Nets haven’t been out of the news after trading star players Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving away. The trade deadline saw the Nets consistently be amongst the deadlines as they finalized the departures of both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks respectively. However, even with their biggest stars gone, they continue to be in the news.
The Nets have continued to be in the news as luckily for them, a new star has been emerging in the form of Cam Thomas. The 21-year-old shooting guard recently became the youngest player in NBA history with three straight 40-point games. The departures of Durant and Irving have unexpectedly put a new NBA star on the horizon as we have seen Thomas show off his ability.
The young shooting guard who happens to be a Japanese international has played in all eight of the Nets’ last eight games, and has been their highest scorer in this run as well. Thomas also created history as he became the youngest player in NBA history to have three consecutive 40-point games, however since then – Thomas got himself fined for a derogatory remark on air.
It was revealed that Cam Thomas was fined an amount of $40,000 by the NBA for making a derogatory remark while on live television.
It was after the Brooklyn Nets’ win over the Chicago Bulls last week when Thomas was adjudged to have made the remark. Speaking to a presenter with new recruit Spencer Dinwiddie after their win, Thomas was asked about Dinwiddie’s comments earlier in the week when he said that though the Nets might not have got the most talented players, they did get the ‘best looking’.
Thomas’ response was “We already had good-looking guys, no homo,” however the remark was adjudged to be insensitive and derogatory to the LGBTQ+ community – earning him his share of the negative spotlight as well as a hefty $40,000 fine.
