What is Kyrie Irving’s salary after his trade to the Dallas Mavericks?
The Kyrie Irving saga drew to a conclusion after the Brooklyn Nets star joined the Dallas Mavericks. The star guard who has been named as a starter in the 2023 NBA All-star game had expressed his decision to leave before NBA Insider Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the guard has informed the team that he wants to be moved or will leave in free agency.
According to Charania, the Nets traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round and multiple second-round picks. Since his move, Irving has played four times for his new franchise, racking up 28.5 points, 4.75 rebounds and 7 assists per game alongside his new partner Luka Doncic in the backcourt.
Inevitably, since his arrival, Irving has struck up a dangerous partnership with the big Slovenian to form one of the most formidable backcourts in the league. Irving brings experience to the youthful Mavericks side, as the eight-time All-Star who won the NBA championship in 2016 has since won two and lost two for his new side since completing a trade earlier this month.
While the move cements the Mavericks as one of the toughest teams to beat in the Western Conference, it also cements Irving’s claim as one of the highest-paid players in the league.
As it turns out, Kyrie Irving’s salary at the Mavs makes him one of the highest-paid players in the league.
Irving signed a four-year, $136 million guaranteed contract with the Nets in 2019, which is set to expire at the end of this season. This came out to an average salary of approximately $34 million per year. Last year, he picked up his $37 million player option for the 2022-23 season, thus fulfilling his four-year commitment to the team.
On top of that, Mavs owner Mark Cuban – who is worth more than $4 billion – is betting $29 million on it. That is the additional luxury tax the Mavericks will pay with Irving on the roster. Their tax bill will now be more than $60 million on top of their $174 million payroll. The Mavs will certainly hope their gamble pays off as they can mount a proper Championship bid.
