Shaquille O’Neal is widely regarded as one of the best players to ever step on a basketball court, and one of the most asked questions about Shaq is which high school did he go to?
One of the most asked questions about the 7’1” mountain of a man who freakishly combined strength, speed and agility in his prime (other than his height, of course) is which high school did Shaquille O’Neal attend before he was drafted into the NBA as a professional basketball player.
attended his high school at Fulda American High School in Fulda, Germany and the Robert G. Cole High School in San Antonio, Texas – following which, Shaq went to the Louisiana State University where he spent his college days from 1989 to 1992.
Because of Shaq’s stepfather’s career in the military, Shaq left his native Newark with his family to go to Germany where he lived on a military base and went to the military Fulda American High School. Coming back to Texas, Shaq joined the Robert G. Cole High School–and it was then when Shaq began playing basketball – a moment that would end up shaping his career.
What was Shaq’s life like when it came to high school?
Shaq enjoyed a very productive couple of years in high school that were the early beginnings of what would be a legendary basketball career in the making.
He led his team to a 68-1 record over two years and helped the team win the state championship during his senior year. His 791 rebounds during the 1989 season remains a state record for a player in any classification. O’Neal’s tendency to make hook shots earned comparisons to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, inspiring him to wear the same jersey number than Abdul-Jabbar, No. 33.
However, since his high school team did not have a 33 jersey, O’Neal chose to wear No. 32 before his college days in Louisiana State University – where he turned out for the Louisiana Tigers. The Orlando drafted Shaq out Magic straight out of Louisiana in the 1992 NBA Draft.
