After serving as Boston’s assistant coach for seven seasons and winning two NBA titles, Chris Ford took over as head coach from 1990 to 1995, leading the Celtics to four postseason appearances in only five seasons.

Ford, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, spent 10 seasons with the Celtics and Detroit Pistons (1972–78). (1978-82). On October 12, 1979, he hit the first 3-point field goal in NBA history, and with Boston in 1981, he won the NBA championship.

Ford, who was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, excelled in high school basketball at Holy Spirit in Absecon, New Jersey, before playing basketball for Villanova from 1969 to 1972. In the 1971 national championship game, his Wildcats were defeated by UCLA. He was selected by the Pistons in the second round, 17th overall, in 1972.

For the 1979–80 NBA season, the 3-point line was implemented. In Boston’s season-opening victory over the visiting Houston Rockets, 114-107, Ford made his historic 3-point shot (in his single attempt). For the Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks (1996–98), Los Angeles Clippers (1998–2000), and Philadelphia 76ers (2003-04), he accumulated a coaching record of 323–376.

Ford averaged 2.2 attempts per game during his first season and blasted a scorching 42.7% from three-point range. The Mad Bomber, as he was nicknamed, demonstrated that the 3-pointer could be a potent and dependable shot.
