Donovan Mitchell wasn’t aware that he was going to be traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and thought he was going to Miami or New York.
The Utah Jazz traded Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the offseason. Mitchell was linked to trade with both the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks throughout the entirety of the offseason; however, the Cavaliers were the team that ultimately acquired his services.
The signing of Donovan Mitchell has almost instantly catapulted the Cavaliers into the conversation as a serious contender for a spot in the NBA Finals. In order to acquire Mitchell, the Cavaliers shipped off a package that included players such as Lauri Markkanen, Ochair Agbaji, and Collin Sexton, in addition to three unprotected first-round picks of their own.
Fans are thrilled that Donovan Mitchell will play for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Still, Mitchell himself was unaware that he would be joining the Cavaliers and instead believed that he would be traded to either Miami or New York.
Talking about the move in the offseason, Mitchell said, “We didn’t know any of this was happening. So we would be working out, and I said this to somebody, I was like, man I’m working out Bam and others and I’m thinking like, ‘This is just preparing. This is what it’s going to look like.’ And D.G. is right here.”
He added, “Miami, New York, where else? Maybe Washington. Those were the three in my head that I thought, ‘Okay, if anything were to happen, it would probably be on that side.’”
