What happened to former NBA star Shawn Kemp and is he still in jail?
Former NBA star Shawn Kemp was arrested on Wednesday and booked in a Pierce County (Washington) jail in connection with a drive-by shooting. Tacoma police said an altercation between occupants of two vehicles near the Tacoma Mall led to shots being fired early Wednesday afternoon. However, he has since been released from jail.
No injuries were reported, and one of the cars fled the scene, according to a release from the police department on social media. A gun was recovered, and an investigation is ongoing. Online records for Pierce County show that Kemp, 53, was booked on a felony drive-by-shooting charge at 5:58 p.m. local time, about four hours after the incident.
The official Twitter account of the Tacoma Police Department tweeted earlier today: “At 1:58 pm, an altercation between the occupants of 2 cars led to shots being fired at a parking lot in the 4500 blk of S. Steele St. One car fled. No injuries were reported. A gun was recovered. A 53-yr-old male was booked for Drive-By Shooting. The investigation is ongoing.”
The news was reposted by ESPN journalist Adrian Wojnarowski, who tweeted: “According to the Pierce (Wash.) Corrections Inmate listings, six-time NBA All-Star Shawn Kemp – a legendary member of the Seattle Sonics – has been booked in an alleged drive-by shooting”. However, Kemp has since been released from jail after it was adjudged that he acted in self defense, and all the charges filed against him were dropped.
Kemp was a multiple-time All-Star and a bona fide legend for his franchise – the Seattle SuperSonics.
Kemp was a six-time NBA All-Star who played 14 seasons in the league, including eight with the Seattle SuperSonics, who selected him 17th overall in the 1989 NBA Draft.
Kemp scored 15,347 points and racked up 8,834 rebounds and 1,279 blocks over his 14-seasom long career where he also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Orlando Magic in the NBA. Nicknamed “Reign Man”, he was also a three-time All-NBA Second Team member.
