The Good Nurse, a psychological thriller coming to Netflix, is based on the true story of Charles Cullen, a nurse and convicted serial killer who confessed to killing up to 40 patients in New Jersey over the course of his 16-year career. The film is the latest in a flood of true crime offerings from the streaming service.
The film, directed by Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm and based on Charles Graeber’s 2013 book The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder, examines the great lengths that Amy Loughren, an additional nurse, went to track down Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), as well as the system that allowed his crimes to go unpunished for so long.
And filmmaker Lindholm claims that this is what distinguishes The Good Nurse from other Netflix serial killer films. According to Lindholm, “When I read the book, I realized that it wasn’t just another serial-killer movie.” It was a portrayal of both the nurse who managed to stop the serial killer and a system that failed to do so.
He continued, describing some of the difficulties that come with focusing on this aspect: “We had to remind ourselves that everyone was human at some point, and we did not want to get enamored with the atrocities.” The most challenging aspect, in my opinion, was to preserve the suspense element while yet keeping it interesting, exhilarating, and true to human nature.
The Good Nurse is set to have its theatrical debut on October 19, 2022. A week later, on October 26, Netflix subscribers will be able to see the film on the site.
The film will have its world premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival before making its BFI London Film Festival 2022 debut on October 10th.
According to the official Netflix synopsis, “A nurse risks her own life to uncover the truth after becoming suspicious that a colleague is to blame for a string of unexplained patient deaths.”
More hints were provided by the most recent trailer. It featured the police asking Amy to look over the records of an elderly woman named Ana Martinez, and Amy finding out that she had a very high level of insulin in her blood when she passed away. When a second woman suffers the same fate, Amy starts to wonder if Charles might be to blame and starts looking for his former coworkers.
He has indeed worked at nine hospitals, switching between them whenever the other nurses start to get suspicious. Will Amy, however, be able to prevent him from going to number 10?
Charles Cullen will be portrayed by Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything, The Trial of the Chicago 7), and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Zero Dark Thirty) will play Amy Loughren, a nurse and single mother.
Vanity Fair quoted Redmayne as saying of the preparation he went through for the role: “From an actor’s point of view, [it was about] trying to interrogate why — why this person did what he did, with the acknowledgment that you were never going to find that answer.“
But the interrogation of it was interesting, he said. Kim Dickens (Gone Girl, Fear the Walking Dead), Noah Emmerich (The Americans, The Truman Show), and Nnamdi Asomugha (Hello, My Name Is Doris, Crown Heights) complete the cast of The Good Nurse.
The True Story of ICU Nurse Charles Cullen, as told in Charles Graeber’s 2013 book The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder, served as the inspiration for the 2013 film The Good Nurse. Capturing the Killer Nurse, a documentary chronicling the investigation into Cullen makes its Netflix debut on November 11.
