American teenage sensation Coco Gauff pulled off a bit of an upset by defeating Naomi Osaka
Grand Slams are known for players causing upsets and Coco Gauff pulled one off by defeating Naomi Osaka in the third round.
The American teenager had already shocked the world by defeating Venus Williams in the first round, but this was an incredible performance.
The 15-year-old came into this game by the skin of her teeth. She needed three sets to defeat Sorana Cirstea with the final set going Gauff’s way 7-5.
Osaka, for her part, had some trouble defeating Saisai Zheng in the previous round. The defending champion also threw her racquet during the match but was composed enough to win.
However, Gauff was in some great form as she defeated the 22-year-old Osaka 6-3, 6-4. The American won three out of her four break points and also won 90% of her second serves.
The teen also won 60 points compared to 45 for the defending champion and gained some revenge for the exit at the US Open.
A major statement from the teenager
Gauff could not believe how well she had done against the defending champion. She won just three games the last time the pair met at the US Open.
This win ensured that Gauff reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career.
The teen is also in doubles action and will face either Sofia Kenin or Zhang Shaui in the fourth round.
It will be interesting to see how far she does in this tournament, given the other upsets already in the competition.
Gauff certainly shocked many fans and here are some of their reactions from Twitter.
Not every day a 15 year old gets to knock out a defending champion in a grand slam🙌👌

I hope other big serving players take a leaf out of Coco's book. It is all about variety, not power. Such great decision making from a young one.

Is women's tennis just this broken or is this girl just that good? Regardless, what a future this young lady has! #AO2020 #AustralianOpen #AusOpen
