Here is all you need to know about the New England Patriots and their Super Bowl wins

The New England Patriots were founded on the 16th of November, 1959 as the Boston Patriots. The first season they took part in, was the 1960 NFL season.

Originally a charter member of the American Football League, they joined the NFL in 1970, when the AFL-NFL merger took place.

The Patriots could never win the Super Bowl during their first 30 years in the NFL. Not once in the 20th century.

However, they did make it to the playoffs, an impressive 9 times. Their first-ever playoff appearance came six years after their debut NFL season – in 1976. They lost in the first round of the 1976 playoffs.

They once again made it to the playoffs two years later in 1978 – and suffered yet another first round exit.

Four years later in 1982, the Patriots made it to their third NFL playoffs, only to exit in the first round again.

First Super Bowl appearance

In 1985, the Patriots made it to their first Super Bowl, under the guidance of Raymond Berry. But, they were defeated by the Chicago Bears – a 46-10 thrashing.

The very next year, the Patriots made it to the playoffs, but bowed out in the first round.

A long playoff-less drought of 8 years followed. Finally, in 1994, the Patriots once again made it to the playoffs. They were beaten by the Cleveland Browns in the wildcard playoffs.

In 1996, 1997 and 1998, the Patriots made it to the playoffs. In the 1996 season, the Patriots reached their second Super Bowl. However, they went down to the Green Bay Packers 35-21.

The next season the Patriots exited in the second round of the playoffs, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and did not make it past the first round in 1998.

The Tom Brady and Bill Belichick combo

In 2000, The New England Patriots made two signings, The GOAT, Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick.

But, little did they know that these two would go on to work wonders, never seen before in the NFL.

The Brady-Belichick era is considered to be one of the greatest eras in sports history.

Both Brady and Belichick were roped in by the Patriots in 2000. Brady was picked in round 6 of the 2000 NFL Draft as the number 199 pick.

First Super Bowl Win

The 2000 NFL season took the Patriots nowhere. A dismal 5-11 run. But, it was the sign of things to come. The rebuilding process was in full flow.

The Patriots were a different gravy altogether in the 2001 NFL season. They flipped their 2000 record, winning 11 and losing just 5.

In the playoffs, the Patriots beat the Oakland Raiders to advance the AFC Championship match. They beat the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the AFC Championship and eventually advance to the Super Bowl.

The Patriots beat the St.Louis Cardinals at Super Bowl XXXVI to claim their first-ever Super Bowl win.

They couldn’t recreate their magic in the 2002 season – failing to even qualify for the playoffs.

The team came back even stronger in the 2003 season. This season the Patriots ran riot with 14 wins and just 2 losses in the regular season.

They won the AFC Championship after beating Indianapolis Colts, and eventually advanced to the Super Bowl XXXVIII.

A narrow 29-32 win over the Carolina Panthers saw them win their second Super Bowl in three years.

Next year was no different, they won the Super Bowl in a very similar fashion, this time beating the Philadelphia Eagles.

What followed then was a 10-year dry spell. Despite making it to the playoffs almost every season, except 2008, they never went on to win the Super Bowl.

It was only in 2014 season that they won their fourth Super Bowl after beating Seattle Seahawks 28-24.

The Patriots made it to the 2015 Playoffs but were not able to get through to the Super Bowl. They made it the next year and won the Super Bowl for the fifth time, beating the Atlanta Falcons 34-28.

The Patriots won their sixth and final Super Bowl in 2019 after beating the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.

They have a total of 6 Super Bowls to their name.
