Newcastle United Opinion: Why Aaron Mooy will be a good fit for Newcastle?
According to a report from the Northern Echo, Newcastle United are interested in signing Huddersfield Town star Aaron Mooy this summer. The report adds that the Magpies could be willing to sell Jonjo Shelvey in the summer transfer window, with West Ham ready to offer a fee in the region of £20million.
Aaron Mooy, 28, has done well ever since joining Huddersfield Town a couple of years ago. The Australian played a crucial part in the Terriers’ promotion to the Premier League and also starred in the club’s successful battle against relegation last term. However, he has endured an injury-hit campaign, managing just 23 league games.
With Huddersfield all but relegated, Newcastle will have an easier job to sign Mooy as a potential replacement for Shelvey.
Shelvey has been a big player for Newcastle since joining from Swansea City in 2016. But the midfielder has spent most of this season on the sidelines, leaving him as well as manager Rafael Benitez frustrated. It is quite obvious now that the 27-year-old has fallen down the pecking order for playing time at Tyneside.
Moreover, the unexpected rise of Sean Longstaff, the renaissance of Isaac Hayden and Ki Sung-yueng’s consistency in midfield all make it easier for Benitez to let Shelvey go. The six-cap England international is still playing in his prime but at this point Newcastle should sell the midfielder if West Ham come calling for his services in the summer.
And with the money they get from Shelvey’s sale, Benitez should use it on signing Mooy, who might be available on cheap following Huddersfield’s relegation. Mooy is a central midfielder by trade but he can also play in a holding role or as a no.10. He is an intelligent player, who has an excellent range of passing and uses his vision to create chances for his teammates.
The Australian international can keep possession well, control games from midfield and break up opposition attacks as well. The former Manchester City man’s energy to drive his team forward and passing abilities are second to nothing, while he is also a goal threat. On paper, Mooy would be a tailor-made replacement for the seemingly departing Shelvey.
Verdict
Mooy could get a chance to leave Huddersfield in the summer as the lure of the Premier League is too big to resist. In fact, the 28-year-old is too good for the Championship and there won’t be a shortage of clubs battling for his signature.
