According to the Chronicle Live Newcastle United are pondering over the transfer of former Aston Villa U-23 player Colin Odutayo. The youngster was recently released by Villa as he looks for a new club.
Colin Odutayo is a 19-year-old Dutch winger who is currently a free agent. He is an extremely versatile attacker with the capability to play on either wing or as a striker. He started his career at the youth academy of SSH Herten. From there he moved to KRC Genk’s U-17 team.
In 2017, he joined Aston Villa, linking up with the club’s U18 setup. In two years he managed to make 33 appearances and contribute 11 goals and 5 assists. Last season, he moved up to the U23s and impressed in the limited chances he got.
At the end of the campaign, he was allowed to leave on a free. The Magpies held a trial for the player when he was allowed to play for the U-23 side against Hartlepool. Currently he is training with Sheffield Wednesday to keep fit before any potential move. A lot of clubs are closely monitoring the situation. (h/t Chronicle Live)
Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron are currently Newcastle’s best options in the wider areas of the pitch. Beyond the duo, there is not enough quality and depth on the flanks, considering that Matt Ritchie was used at left-back last season, while Christian Atsu struggled.
The signing of Ryan Fraser on a free transfer does provide manager Steve Bruce with added options. However, with Saint-Maximin performing exceptionally well over the last season, it won’t be long before a top side comes calling. And, it would be hard for Newcastle United to turn down any substantial offer.
At 19 years of age, Colin Odutayo is the perfect player to play second-fiddle to him. For the time being, he could be sent into the U23 setup and in a year or two, he will be well poised to challenge for a starting spot and maybe even replace Saint-Maximin in case he leaves.
Newcastle United should make efforts to sign him. The fact that they have nothing to lose from this deal due to his free agent status and his potential to become a good player, makes it absolutely necessary that the Magpie work on getting Odutayo.
Odutayo is at the tender age of 19 but has taken giant strides in terms of development over the last 3 seasons at the Aston Villa U18 and U23 teams. Definitely a player who can be labelled as one for the future.
