Newcastle United Opinion: Why Newcastle should make a move for Rogerio?
According to a report from Italian outlet Tuttosport, Newcastle United are set to renew their interest in Juventus full-back Rogerio Oliveira da Silva. (h/t The Chronicle)
The Magpies had shown an interest in signing the young Brazilian back in the winter market, but a deal didn’t materialise and the 21-year-old stayed on loan with Sassuolo. He has now returned to Turin, but it is not expected the full-back will remain at Juventus for much long.
The report claim Newcastle are preparing an offer in the region of €20m to €25million for Rogerio Oliveira da Silva.
If a sale of Newcastle United proves to go through, then it could be a win-win deal for both the buyer and the seller. Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of Bin Zayed Group, are in talks for a potential takeover at the reported price of £350 million.
The Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has still not signed a contract extension and has had no contact with anyone from the Bin Zayed Group, even though the potential new owners would be desperate to keep hold of the Spaniard. Once new terms for Benitez are thrashed out, he needs to be backed heavily in the transfer market.
Even though Newcastle have a solid defence, Benitez needs to improve that department further if his team are to break into the top half of the table next season. The Spaniard found success with three at the back and two wing-backs this past season. Three central defenders made it difficult for the opposition attackers to score, whilst the wing-backs provided width to the attack.
Matt Ritchie filled in at the left wing-back role for the majority of the 2018/19 campaign. Antonio Barreca, signed on loan from AS Monaco in January, managed just one appearance. Paul Dummett looked assured in a back three, while Kenedy couldn’t match the heights of the six-month loan spell of 2017/18.
However, Benitez needs to find a permanent solution at left wing-back. Surely, he cannot go with Ritchie despite the diminutive Scotsman impressing with his defensive abilities and work-ethic. That is where someone like Rogerio might come in handy for Newcastle.

Rogerio – who joined Juventus in 2016, before re-joining Sassuolo on a two-year loan the following summer—is an energetic, pacy and powerful wing-back, equally adept in playing as a left-back, central defence or in midfield. He has the physical side to his game as well which will help him adapt easily to the demands of the Premier League.
Verdict
Signing Rogerio makes a lot of sense for Newcastle. The Magpies would be completing an extremely shrewd piece of business if they’re able to get this deal through the door before the summer window slams shut.
