Why Newcastle United must make a move for Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong
According to the Chronicle (h/t The Lancs Live), Newcastle United are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in signing Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong.
Adam Armstrong, 23, has been a revelation at Blackburn Rovers since joining permanently from Newcastle United in August 2018. He has scored 10 goals and supplied seven assists in 35 matches during this campaign, playing on the left, right and as a centre-forward under Tony Mowbray.
The Englishman, who is contracted at Ewood Park until 2022, has stepped up to the plate following Bradley Dack’s injury and played a key role in helping the Lancashire outfit to eighth in the Championship table, just three points off the final playoff spot.
Speaking about Newcastle United, they have endured goalscoring problems this season with the players managing only 24 goals in 27 games. Club-record signing Joelinton has scored just one goal in 26 league appearances since his move from Hoffenheim. Plus, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto are yet to contribute a league goal this term.
Failure in scoring goals of late has seen the Magpies drift to the bottom half of the table. They have won just once in their last five league games, with Steve Bruce’s getting thrashed 4-0 at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
With Newcastle royally struggling for form, Bruce must prioritise signing a forward when the transfer window opens in summer. Having said that, they should attempt to bring in Adam Armstrong.
Armstrong spent 12 years coming up through the ranks with Newcastle, making 21 first-team appearances. He was never really given a proper run through and having joined Blackburn two years back, the 23-year-old has thrived in Lancashire.
He has been in red-hot form of late for Blackburn. His last 15 games in all competitions have seen him yield six goals and six assists for Tony Mowbray’s side.

Capable of playing out wide or upfront, Armstrong could offer a versatile attacking option for Bruce and reduce the goalscoring burden on Joelinton next season. Since leaving St. James’ Park, the 23-year-old has matured as a player, with his rich vein of form attracting interest from various Premier League clubs.
Verdict
Armstrong would add depth to Newcastle’s attacking ranks, whilst bringing competition within the squad. Having netted nine goals in the Championship this term, there is every chance of the 23-year-old increasing the Magpies’ productivity in front of goal in 2020/21 campaign.
