Becky Hammon is a former professional basketball player and current assistant coach for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs. She was born on March 11, 1977, in Rapid City, South Dakota, and played college basketball at Colorado State University.
Hammon began her professional playing career in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in 1999 when she was signed by the New York Liberty. She played for the Liberty for eight seasons before being traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars (now known as the Las Vegas Aces) in 2007. Hammon played for the Silver Stars for eight more seasons before retiring from playing in 2014.
During her playing career, Hammon was a six-time WNBA All-star and was named to the ALL-WNBA first team twice. She also represented the Russian national team in international competitions, winning a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
After retiring from playing, Hammon became the first full-time female assistant coach in NBA history when she was hired by the spurs in 2014. She has since been praised for her coaching skills and has been considered for several head coaching positions in both the NBA and the WNBA.
In addition to her coaching work, Hammon is also known for her philanthropic efforts, including work with the Special Olympics and the Becky Hammon All-star camp, which is a basketball for young girls.
