Last year the famous Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and this article covers the statements made by the Thor actor about his diagnosis and decisions on his acting career.

Chris Hemsworth have Alzheimer’s disease

In November 2022, actor Chris Hemsworth received concerning news about his risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Through genetic testing conducted as part of his Disney+ documentary series, Limitless, Hemsworth discovered that he had inherited two copies of the ApoE4 gene, one from each parent. This genetic makeup places him among a small percentage of the population—around 2-3%—who are up to ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s compared to those without both copies of the gene.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth expressed that this revelation was his “biggest fear” confirmed. While he emphasized that it didn’t imply a definitive diagnosis, the knowledge prompted him to take a break from his acting career. He explained that working on the show had sparked a desire within him to prioritize his well-being and longevity.

Hemsworth recognized the importance of implementing preventive measures for Alzheimer’s, such as managing sleep, stress, nutrition, movement, and fitness. These lifestyle factors, when consistently applied, can have a positive impact on overall health and potentially mitigate the risk of developing the disease.

Regarding the documentary series, Hemsworth shared that its creator, Darren Aronofsky, and one of the doctors on the show, Peter Attia, discussed how to address the diagnosis on camera. Initially, the plan was for the actor to receive all his genetic test results live during filming.

However, Aronofsky privately informed Hemsworth of the Alzheimer’s-related findings. Despite being given the option to exclude these details from the show, Hemsworth believed it was important to include his genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s. He hoped to raise awareness and promote a better understanding of preventive measures among the audience.

Hemsworth revealed that his grandfather was currently undergoing treatment for Alzheimer’s, further highlighting the personal connection he felt to the condition. Following the completion of his role in the upcoming Mad Max film Furiosa, directed by George Miller, Hemsworth intended to take a hiatus from acting. He expressed his desire to spend quality time with his partner, actor Elsa Pataky, and their three children in their home in Byron Bay.

Chris Hemsworth Change after the diagnosis

Discovering his increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease has led actor Chris Hemsworth to adopt a new perspective on life. In a November episode of his Disney+ docuseries Limitless, Hemsworth received the news that he possesses two sets of the APOE4 gene, inherited from both his parents. This genetic makeup puts him at a significantly higher risk—eight to ten times more—of developing the condition.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the APOE4 gene is associated with an elevated risk of Alzheimer’s and is linked to a more severe form of the disease. Hemsworth reflected on how this information has prompted him to make important changes during an interview on Good Morning America.
