Erriyon Knighton Career
Knighton made everyone take notice of him when he became the under-18 world champion in the boys’ 200 meters on May 31, 2021. He improved Usain Bolt’s under-18 record by two hundredths of a second to 20.11 seconds.
He went on to improve his record at the US Olympic Trials to 20.04 seconds in the first round on June 25, and then on June 26 to 19.88 seconds in the semi-finals, improving Bolt’s under-20 record by five hundredths of a second.
In the finals, he improved his record to 19.84 seconds in the final on June 27 and deservingly qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics. This is the current world under-18 record.
In the 2020 Summer Olympics, he went on to become the youngest male to represent the United States in track and field since Jim Ryun in 1964.
He finished first in the 200-meter Olympic semi-final heat and in the final, he finished fourth taking 19.93 seconds.
He also holds the world under-20 record in 200 meters with a time of 19.49 seconds which he achieved on April 30, 2022. This made him the fourth-fastest athlete in history over 200 meters. The first three are Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, and Michael Johnson.
