Throughout her life, Iyanla has faced profound challenges, including the tragic loss of her daughter, Gemma Vanzant, in 2003, who battled a rare form of colon cancer. Recently, she announced that her daughter Nisa Vanzant passed away, adding more tragedy to her life.

After graduating Summa Cum Laude from college, she entered the City University of New York Law School at Queens College. Her exceptional oratory skills attracted the attention of the Philadelphia Public Defender’s office, which offered her a job without a formal interview. Glamour Magazine hailed her as one of Halle Berry’s five “Sheros,” and Ebony Magazine recognized her as one of the country’s most influential African Americans. She was also listed among the 100 Most Influential Women by Women’s Day Magazine and praised as one of the “most dynamic speakers in the United States” by Emerge Magazine.

Iyanla’s enthusiasm, unwavering purpose, and leadership as the founder and director of the Inner Visions Institute of Spiritual Development are evident in all of her lessons.
