F1 icon Lewis Hamilton and tennis superstar Serena Williams are reportedly investing nearly £20m towards a consortium vying to become the new owners of Chelsea Football Club.

Earlier on Thursday, Sky Sports revealed that Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams have joined Sir Martin Broughton’s bid to buy Premier League club, Chelsea. The Blues were put up for sale by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich after Russia attacked Ukraine.

Abramovich’s assets in the UK have been sanctioned and it appears that the 55-year-old is now set to lose control of Chelsea. One of the major bids to buy the west London club has come in from former Liverpool FC chairman Martin Broughton.

According to reports, seven-time F1 champion Hamilton and 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams are planning to invest a whopping £10 million each into the consortium, led by Broughton. The two sporting icons who are prepared to invest in their latest potential acquisition have already become established investors in their rights over the past few years.

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Williams is already an investor in Los Angeles’ Angel City FC, a football club that plays in the National Women’s Soccer League. Earlier this week, the 40-year-old’s venture capital fund announced a financial investment in Opensponsorship, a British-based sports technology start-up.

Meanwhile, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has backed a range of early-stage companies such as Zapp, a London-based rapid grocery delivery app. Certain fans of the racing driver were surprised that Hamilton was being involved in a bid to buy Chelsea. The reason being the 37-year-old had previously proclaimed that he is an Arsenal fan.
