Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the co-owners of the American football league known as XFL which recently announced the NFL Alumni Academy as its partner for the development of the players
The People’s Champ joined ex-wife Dany Garcia as a co-owner of the returning football league launched by The Rock’s former boss, WWE chairman, and CEO Vince McMahon, in 2001. XFL restarted in 2020 after a long gap but it was brought to a halt owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The XFL filed for bankruptcy before The Rock joined Garcia and Redbird Capital to purchase the league for $15 million last August.
The Rock appeared alongside Garcia on last week’s episode of ESPN Get Up and revealed how much he loved the sport but struggled to make it to the first 53-man roster and always ended up as the 54th man during his playing days.
The Rock tweeted:
“Why buy the @XFL2023? I love the game of football. 53 players on an @NFL roster — I was always that 54th. I can create opportunities for other players to get after it and achieve their goals. Grow the game of football.
#94 on the field
#1 in your heart
This is the XFL.”
He noted that XFL would have been a great platform for him if it existed during the time he came out of college. He would have had a chance to improve his game and work toward another shot at NFL.
“I would have loved to have played for the XFL if the XFL was around when I was coming out of college,” he said.
Popular NFL star wants to face The Rock in WWE
The four-time Super Bowl Champion Rob Gronkowski has expressed his wish to face the 10-time world champion Rock in WWE or at least be his tag team partner in a match.
Rob Gronkowski’s love for WWE is well-known. He isn’t new to the company as well. He has had a couple of WrestleMania moments himself. Gronkowski helped Mojo Rawley win the Andre the Giant Battle Royal by taking out Jinder Mahal at WrestleMania 33.
Gronkowski was the host of WrestleMania 36 and he even won the WWE 24/7 Championship at The Grandest Stage of Them All. As per reports, The Rock is in line to face his cousin brother Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. It will be interesting to see if WWE inserts Gronkowski in the build-up to the highly-anticipated match.
