Tony Khan has announced plans for a new AEW show, AEW Rampage
News broke earlier this week that AEW has renewed their deal with Warner Media to shift Dynamite from TNT to TBS in 2022.
But fans were treated to an additional piece of good news. AEW has announced its plans to release a new show- AEW Rampage.
This is the 3rd hour of AEW’s weekly programming. AEW Rampage will air on Fridays alongside WWE SmackDown and will debut on August 13, 2021, on TNT at 10 PM.
And talking about this in detail was Tony Khan himself, as he joined Dave LaGreca and Mark Henry in the latest edition of the Busted Open podcast.
“… I didn鈥檛 want to do three hours of Dynamite. They asked at one point if I wanted to do three hours of Dynamite when it came up about doing a third hour, and I said I really believe in doing it on another night. This time slot, I think, is really good for the fans to keep a great night of wrestling fresh on Friday nights. And so at 10 PM, you鈥檙e going to have a great option to come watch [AEW] Rampage.”
Tony Khan promises AEW Rampage won’t be a secondary show
The news of a new show coming around on AEW was made public in January itself. And as it happened with SmackDown initially, Khan has promised that Rampage won’t be overlooked for Dynamite.
“I promise Rampage isn鈥檛 going to be a secondary show. Rampage is going to be the partner of Dynamite- the equivalent to Dynamite. We have these 2 strong franchises Dynamite and Rampage and they are our weekly core properties.”
Dynamite already believes it forced WWE NXT to change its weekly airtime from Wednesday to Tuesday, and Rampage could be seen as a direct attack on WWE’s SmackDown despite having a different air-time.
The Blue brand of WWE, with stars like Roman Reigns and Bianca Belair, will be the top dog on Fridays for years to come. But Rampage could see SmackDown drop down in ratings to a certain extent.
The show, as it stands, will air just after SmackDown finishes on FOX. It remains to be seen how Rampage is treated by AEW, but with just an hour of wrestling on it, fans can expect a lot of action jam-packed into a 60-minute show.
