Obi-Wan Kenobi is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. Within the original trilogy. He is a Jedi Master and plays a supporting character and is portrayed by English actor Alec Guinness.
A younger version of the character serves as one of the two main protagonists alongside Anakin Skywalker and is portrayed by Scottish actor Ewan McGregor. He is frequently featured as the main character in various other Star Wars media, including the television miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi, in which McGregor reprised the role.
His performances as Obi-Wan in the original Star Wars (1977) earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor the only acting nomination for a Star Wars film. McGregor’s performance as the character received much praise as well.
How did Obi-Wan Kenobi influence Star Wars?
Obi-Wan Kenobi has played several important roles throughout the Star Wars franchise. He was an important member of the Old Jedi Order and Jedi High Council former Padawan to Qui-Gon Jinn and Jedi Master to both Anakin and Luke Skywalker.
In the star wars prequel trilogy, he portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi as the Padawan learner to Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Throughout the original trilogy, Obi-Wan had been in a mentoring position to Luke with mentions of Vader being a prior student before he falls to the Dark Side.
Obi-Wan plays a huge role in the clone wars where it also portrays Obi-Wan’s storylines and numerous contributions to the Jedi’s side of the conflict. Standout moments include his duel with Asajj Ventress, his doomed and tragic romance with Satine Kryze, and the faking of his death to go undercover.
He has been involved in some of the best fights in the saga. In Episode III Obi-Wan memorably defeats General Grievous after an active battle with some well-aimed blaster shots.
He also introduces fans to Force Ghosts which has been shocking for the audiences however it turns out that the visuals of Star Wars force ghosts have become a staple of the franchise. His blue and transparent Force Ghost form makes its official debut in The Empire Strikes Back with directives on further Jedi training for Luke. Obi-Wan continues to reappear at certain pivotal moments in Luke’s training with Yoda.
