All you need to know about the relationship between Steelers player T.J. Watt and Cardinals player J.J. Watt.
Yes, T.J. Watt and J.J. Watt are real brothers. The duo has been causing havoc in the NFL for many years, and are among the best defensive players of this generation. J.J. Watt, who plays for the Arizona Cardinals recently announced that he will be retiring from the NFL after this season, and it came as a shock to many.
Watt’s decision to leave the sport of football for good was supported by a multitude of factors, but none of those factors are related to his play on the field. The defensive end, who is 33 years old, has recorded 9.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, six passes defended, and one fumble recovery so far this season.
Like his brother J.J. Watt, T.J. Watt is also on his way to a potential Hall of Fame career. He has been often compared to his older brother, and he once spoke about it as well.
Talking about the comparisons with J.J. Watt, T.J. Watt said, “This is like a real thing. I do think it’s misconstrued…I want people to understand how great my brother truly was in his prime, think it gets lost today, and I know he’d be upset if I said this, but I think it truly is.”
He added, “You go back, and you look, you watch the film, the guy was frickin’ unstoppable. Absolutely unstoppable. He’ll never say it, but it’s like, I think people need to go back and look at that. The guy was doing incredible things for four or five years, and I think he can still play at a high level. I think I’m too early in my career to compare myself to him at the moment, honestly.”
T.J. Watt currently plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers and is their most important player. He still has many years ahead of him, and is likely to end up in the Hall of Fame likewise to his older brother J.J.
J.J. Watt gave his reasons for surprising retirement
Watt and his wife, Kealia Ohai Watt, became parents for the very first time in October when they presented to the world with a baby called Koa. This event marked the beginning of their journey as parents.
The family took Koa to his first National Football League game last weekend, which also happened to be J.J. Watt’s last home game in his career as a professional football player. As a direct result of this, a big factor contributing to his decision to retire is the aspiration to increase the amount of time he can devote to his young family.
Speaking about his retirement, Watt said, “I’ve known for a little while. It’s the right time, It feels like the right time. I’ve put so much into the game and the wins and the losses, the mental stress and passion that comes with it, it just weighs on you. It’s heavy, I mean it’s really heavy.”
He added, “The losses are very tough to take. You live with the highs and the lows, and I’ve always said that I’d way rather live with the highs and the lows than never know in the middle. I’ve got a son now. Obviously, I had a heart scare in the middle of the year, so there’s certainly some of that that played into it. But I’m very happy and am very at peace with it.”
Watt has recently started a family, and he has come to the realization that it is time for him to shift his concentration away from football and into his new family. Watt has had a career that he can look back on with a great deal of satisfaction, and at the end of this season, he will make the announcement that he will retire from playing in the National Football League.
It will almost certainly earn him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Kealia and Koa will be able to look at the successful conclusion of Watt’s football career in Canton and grin with pride.
