Kellen Moore is hired as the new offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers after he was fired by the Dallas Cowboys.
According to an announcement made by the team on Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers and Kellen Moore have reached an agreement for Moore to take over as the team’s offensive coordinator. After going through an end-of-season evaluation procedure, the Dallas Cowboys released a statement saying that they and Moore had come to a “mutual decision to part ways.” This action comes less than 24 hours after the Cowboys made that announcement.
Moore will take over as offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, replacing Joe Lombardi, who was let go after the team finished with a record of 10-7 and was eliminated from playoff contention by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild-card round.
Skip Bayless has high expectations from the Chargers because of Moore. Bayless said, “Chargers to next year’s Super Bowl.” He certainly knows how great Moore was with the Dallas Cowboys and with Justin Herbert the new Chargers OC can reach new heights that he wasn’t able to do with Dak Prescott.
Moore, who is 33 years old, will take over an attack that is led by quarterback Justin Herbert, who broke Andrew Luck’s record for the most passing yards accumulated by a player in his first three NFL seasons during the 2017 season. Moore also takes over for the team with receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, as well as running back Austin Ekeler, who led the NFL with 18 touchdowns in the previous season.
Kellen Moore will love to coach Justin Herbert
Kellen Moore will now be coaching Herbert, who is already considered to be one of the finest quarterbacks in the NFL. Moore was previously working with Dak Prescott, who led the league in interception rate this season. Moore is going to have a blast coaching Herbert because he possesses a skillset that Prescott did not have.
During the previous season, the Chargers’ offense scored 22.47 points on the average per game, which was good for 10th place in the league. However, they had trouble running the ball consistently and ended up ranking 30th in the league with an average of only 89.6 yards per game.
Moore served as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator for four seasons, during which time the team’s attack finished in the top four in the league in terms of points per game (27.7), yards per game (391), and percentage of third downs converted (44%). It is predicted that he will employ a more balanced offensive assault while coaching the Chargers than he did while coaching the Bolts under Lombardi.
The Chargers also conducted interviews with the following candidates for the position: Zac Robinson, the quarterback’s coach and passing game coordinator for the Rams; Greg Olsen, the senior offensive assistant for the Rams; Thomas Brown, the assistant head coach for the Rams; and Jerrod Johnson, the assistant quarterback’s coach for the Minnesota Vikings. In the end, they came to the conclusion that Kellen Moore is the most qualified candidate for the position.
It may have seemed after the loss to the Jaguars that Brandon Staley’s job as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers was in peril, but it is probable that he will return for the next season. The loss to the Jaguars may have given the impression that Staley’s job was in jeopardy. Staley continues to have a positive outlook on his team and feels that by making some little modifications, they will be able to improve their chances of competing for the Super Bowl the following season.
By the time that Justin Herbert enters his fourth season in the NFL, he may already have signed a significant extension to his existing contract. If so, he will have had the opportunity to do so. Staley’s position within the organization is in jeopardy if the team is unable to achieve the goals they have set for themselves during what is shaping up to be a very challenging season for them.
