The NFL cheerleaders have been a part of the league since 1954, a staggering 67 years. The Baltimore Colts (now Indianapolis Colts) were the first team in the NFL to have cheerleaders.
Currently, 26 teams in the NFL have cheerleaders. There are a total of 32 teams in the league.
However, one must know that cheerleading in the NFL is never a full-time job. Most of the cheerleaders have full-time jobs outside that of the NFL.
It is not easy becoming one as well. The cheerleaders have to go through a number of auditions, interviews and tests to get to where they are.
There are instances where they will have to comply with certain photoshoot rules, stay at the peak of their physical fitness. Slightly overweight, and you are discarded.
Plus, a lot of controversies surround the cheerleaders. The primary ones being the objectification of women. They have to deal with a lot of groping and sexual harassment as well.
And from time to time, there are several complaints about the cheerleaders being underpaid. In fact, most of them are underpaid. Only a few go on to make a living out of cheerleading alone.
According to the data currently available, the NFL cheerleaders are paid a bare minimum. Not until recently, a majority of them were paid below the minimum wage in the United States.
The salaries are nowhere close to that of the players and the referees.
On average, an NFL cheerleader makes $150 for a matchday with an addition of $50-75 for one public appearance. The per-hour salary of the cheerleaders is somewhere around $15-20.
This does no good to make a living out of it. In fact, NFL cheerleading is one of the lowest paying jobs in the entire league.
Only a few experienced cheerleaders make more than $50000 per season. The highest-paid cheerleaders earn up to $75,000 per season. They are also believed to get bonuses during the playoffs season and Super Bowl.
There are instances when the main cheerleader fails to turn up. In such cases, they are replaced by a supporting cheerleader. The supporting cheerleaders are believed to make up to $20000 per season. The per-hour salary is approximately 9 dollars.
