One of the most shocking incidents in the NFL is the The Deflategate scandal and it can never be forgotten. The Deflategate incident featured the New England Patriots team players who did something unexpected to win a match. Tom Brady, the team’s quarterback, was the mastermind behind the incident.

Before the National Football League playoffs 2014 clash between New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, Tom Brady planned a strategy to win the clash. Brady planned the deflation of footballs that were used for the AFC Match. Even before the match started, the Colts management found the Deflation of Footballs and complained to the NFL management, but they didn’t have any evidence.
The match began on January 18, 2015 at Gillette Stadium and Walt Anderson was the referee. Reports revealed almost 70,000 people witnessed the AFC Championship Game between Patriots and Colts. In the first half, Tom Brady completed an interception to D’Qwell Jackson of the Colts. This was the starting point of the NFL Deflation incident. The Deflategate NFL scandal was shocking and many couldn’t believe the incident. Deflation of balls is a crime and it called for more awareness.
D’Qwell Jackson gave the ball to the Colts’ manager to check if it was deflated. The ball was checked during halftime and it was again inflated to meet the requirements. Officials also confirmed there were no issues about the pressure of balls in the second half. At the end of the play, the Patriots won the clash with a score of 45-7.
Aftermath of the NFL Deflategate incident
The NFL management officially began an investigation on the Deflation of balls that were used in the AFC 2014 playoffs. Bill Belichick, the head coach of the Patriots , confirmed he was not aware of the incident. The focus shifted towards other Patriots players. Tom Brady said these accusations were ridiculous. Brady, who denied these allegations, was given a 4-match suspension and he also filed a suit against his suspension.
Dean Blandino, the Senior Vice President of the NFL during 2015 confirmed referees don’t log the pressure of the balls and check them before the game. Blandino also revealed the footballs used for the AFC Championship 2014 clash were not tested by referees. Gerry Austin, the former referee said 11 out of 12 balls of Patriots weighed two pounds per square inch, but these were confirmed to be wrong.
Tom Brady was suspended for the first 4 games of the 2016 NFL season. The NFL management asked the New England Patriots to pay $1.5 Million as a penalty. Patriots’ two drafts for the 2016 season were cancelled. Tom Brady was not allowed to interact with Patriots’ players, coaches, and staff.
In 2022, Mike Florio, a sportswriter defended Tom Brady and Patriots stating the NFL hid some information and they trapped Brady and Patriots wrongly. He criticized Troy Vincent for coming to a conclusion about the deflation of balls during halftime in his book.
