All you need to know about whether Frank Reich, the new Carolina Panthers head coach played in the NFL or not.
On Thursday, the Carolina Panthers and Frank Reich, a former coach for the Colts, reached an agreement for Reich to take over as the team’s head coach. The 61-year-old will become the franchise’s sixth head coach in the history of the Carolina organization.
Reich did play in the National Football League (NFL) and was a quarterback. Additionally, he had experience playing with the Carolina Panthers. Reich spent the majority of his playing career at Buffalo, where he went to four consecutive Super Bowls as a player, primarily playing the position of backup quarterback to future Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly. After the Bills selected Reich in the third round of the 1985 NFL Draft, he played for the Bills for the next decade, from 1985 to 1994.
Reich led the Buffalo Bills to the largest postseason comeback in NFL history in 1992 when the team overcame a 35-3 deficit to overcome the Houston Oilers in the wild card round by a score of 41-38. This was despite the fact that he spent the majority of his career serving as Kelly’s backup.
During a game against Miami in 1984, Reich guided his college team, Maryland, to what was then the largest comeback in the history of the NCAA. This feat may have served as a precursor to his greatest achievement in Buffalo. After coming off the bench, he helped guide the Terrapins to a victory over the Hurricanes, 42-40, despite falling behind 31-0 early in the game.
Following a distinguished playing career with the Buffalo Bills, Reich joined the Carolina Panthers in their inaugural year as a franchise in 1995. When he made his debut for Carolina’s Week 1 game against the Falcons, Reich became the team’s first starting quarterback. Reich started three games until Kerry Collins took over as the starting quarterback.
