All you need to know about the length of the contract of the San Diego Padres’ star pitcher Yu Darvish and the details about it.
According to sources, starting pitcher Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres have reached an agreement to extend their current contract for a total of $108 million over the course of six additional years. The right-hander will turn 42 years old throughout the course of the contract’s duration, making it a six-year agreement during the course of his career.
The veteran was expected to become available for free agency following the 2023 campaign, but it appears that the Padres will be able to see out his stellar career with them. In 30 starts for the Padres in 2022, Darvish finished with a record of 16-8 and a 3.10 earned run average (ERA).
He was a rock for the Padres. In 194 and a third innings, he faced 197 batters and struck out 197 of them. His 16 victories were the most he’d had since he first entered the league. Darvish finished the postseason with a record of 2-1 and an earned run average of 2.88.
Darvish, who has been named to the All-Star team five times, is about to embark on his 11th season. He started his career with the Texas Rangers (2012–17), then played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017), Chicago Cubs (2018–20), and San Diego Padres (after being acquired by the Padres in a transaction involving seven other players in December 2020).
In his career, he has pitched 1,488 innings and has a record of 95–75 with a 3.50 earned run average. He has 1 788 strikeouts under his belt. He has twice been in second place in the voting for the Cy Young Award (2013 and 2020).
Yu Darvish’s new deal will be critical for Padres’ success
The worth of the arrangement on an annual basis is estimated to be $18 million, which is $3 million less than what he had been earning annually before the deal. According to MLB.com, the contract will pay Darvish $30 million in 2023, but a significant portion of the money will be paid out upfront.
The Padres, who have the third-highest payroll in all of baseball, are able to avoid paying the luxury tax thanks to the structure. In addition to infielders Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and Manny Machado, and pitcher Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish is one of five Padres players who have signed contracts worth at least $100 million.
Outfielder Juan Soto would be added to the list if the Padres were successful in negotiating a lengthy contract extension with him. Due to the fact that Darvish will be pitching for Japan in the World Baseball Classic and will join the club at its training camp, the amount of time he spends with the Padres during spring training will be restricted.
As with Joe Musgrove, the Padres are committed to having him around for the long haul with their team. If the former Rays pitcher maintains the level of play that he did in the previous season, the Padres will have high hopes of signing their third ace, Blake Snell, to a long-term contract as well.
This upcoming season will mark the return of Fernando Tatis Jr. for the Padres, and with him in the lineup with players such as Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Juan Soto, it is going to be an outstanding year for the Padres. The Padres have a very good chance of winning the world series for the first time in a long time, therefore their fans will be hoping that their team’s pitchers will perform well once again this season.
