San Francisco 49ers star tackle Trent Williams gave a hint of retiring after a gruesome loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The NFC Championship Game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles was a devastating way for the 49ers’ season to come to an end. Their third-string quarterback Brock Purdy got hurt during the game, adding to the team’s injury woes from earlier in the season when Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down with injuries.
Not only Purdy but also the team’s fourth-choice quarterback Josh Johnson suffered a concussion and had to be taken out of the game as a result. The 49ers were forced to play the game without a single quarterback, which was an extremely frustrating situation.
Their standout left tackle, Trent Williams, was also quite upset with the way the previous two seasons ended for his club. Williams dropped a hint about his plans for the future after the game, suggesting that it may be time for him to hang up his cleats.
After the loss to the Eagles, Trent Williams said, “It’s a long season, and having two long seasons back-to-back, it does get pretty grueling for a 34-year-old guy like myself. I’ll be 35 when the season starts. You do kind of think about what’s life like after football. I’ve done this every year of my life since the second grade.”
He added, “You do get to that age, especially at the end of the year like this, as exhausting as it was. And still not getting quite where you want to be. I get it. You get to that age. But, honestly, I’m just taking it one day at a time, and we’ll see how that goes going forward.”
This season, Trent Williams has demonstrated that he can still play at an exceptional level and that he is the finest player at his position despite the fact that he is currently 34 years old. The 49ers are set to be even better next season thanks to the return to health of Trey Lance and Brock Purdy. As a consequence of this, Williams should come back at the very least for the following season.
Trent Williams is a sure-shot Hall of Famer
There aren’t that many active NFL players who can say they have already earned an induction into the Hall of Fame, but individuals like Trent Williams can surely make that claim. Williams has played in the National Football League for Washington and San Francisco for a total of 12 seasons and has been selected to play in 7 Pro Bowls during that time. In addition to that, throughout the course of his career, he has made the All-Pro teams three times.
The upcoming season will be very important for the 49ers because it has the potential to be a make-or-break season. Their core is getting older as time goes on, and if they don’t capitalize on this fact, they might as well say goodbye to their best chances altogether.
Trey After Lance recovers from his injury, the 49ers are likely to make him their starting quarterback once more. Lance will need to demonstrate that he is a superior choice to Brock Purdy in order to justify the team’s decision to trade away assets in order to draft him.
It is highly likely that Jimmy Garoppolo will leave in free agency because of the several teams that will be interested in signing him, and Trent Williams will be expected to take on the role of a leader for his younger quarterbacks. Other skill players such as Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Arik Armstead, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, and Christian McCaffrey will need to produce at the same level that they did this season in order for the 49ers to have a chance to compete for the Super Bowl.
