Baker Mayfield is set to be given the starting quarterback role for the Carolina Panthers ahead of Sam Darnold.
The Carolina Panthers’ quarterback problem is one of the few in the NFL that appears to be unresolved. The current starter Sam Darnold is attempting to hold off the recently acquired Baker Mayfield as well as projected third-round draught pick Matt Corral in what appears to be an open race in training camp.
The common sense around the league was that Mayfield will be given the starting quarterback position in week 1. It is why the Panthers traded for him as they already had Sam Darnold.
According to Ian Rapoport, “It is an open competition between Baker Mayfield — who they just traded for — and Sam Darnold. They are splitting reps, some with the ones, some with the twos. Kind of making sure they both get equal opportunity. But though the reps have been equal, it’s clear that this is Baker Mayfield’s job to lose.”
Unless Baker messes up big time in the preseason or training, he is likely to start week 1 for the Panthers. He has a chance to take revenge on his former team, as the Carolina Panthers will be facing the Cleveland Browns to start off the new season.
