After months of uncertainty around his future in the NFL, Aaron Rodgers has reportedly agreed to sign a mammoth four-year contract extension worth $200 million with the Green Bay Packers.
Earlier on Tuesday, reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stated that Aaron Rodgers committed his future with the Green Bay Packers. The 38-year-old will stay in Wisconsin for the next four years, according to his contract terms.
The deal reportedly includes $153 million in guaranteed money for the quarterback but it would lower his salary-cap figure for the 2022 season. This comes as a massive breakthrough for the Packers, who were unsure of whether the 10-time Pro Bowler would remain with the franchise or not.
For months on end, even last season, Rodgers was mulling over a trade or potential retirement from the NFL. However, he is now set to make the most money (per year) by a player in the NFL. At a staggering $50 million per year, Rodgers will make $5 million per year more than the next highest quarterback, the Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes who is on a 10-year deal worth $450 million with the team.
Fans react to Aaron Rodgers’ record-breaking contract with the Green Bay Packers
While some fans questioned the deal offered to Rodgers given his age, others pointed out that the QB won the MVP award for the second year running last season. His extension with the Packers, where he has been since 2005, will also mean that other franchises will have to look elsewhere if they want to sign a veteran, Super-Bowl winning QB.
On Twitter, one said, “Aaron Rodgers was never motivated by money. But this contract seems like it was all about him earning more. He’s already 38.” While another added, “Rogers is gonna win the Super Bowl for the Packers this year. He just needs to be happy for his team to win. I’m sure he was happy signing that contract.”A third wrote, “Rodgers just won the MVP award for two straight seasons and you guys think he’s finished? Just watch him win that Super Bowl this year.”
