HomeSports News“We were transparent with our intentions with his reps”- Browns GM opens up on Baker Mayfield

NFL: Cleveland Browns General Manager claims the communication was clear with Baker Mayfield during the Deshaun trade

The uncertainty continues to revolve around the future of Baker Mayfield. Once predicted as the savior of the Cleveland Browns franchise, Baker is now seeking a way out of the team.

The Browns traded for Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans, and that was the ultimate signal that Baker’s tenure at Cleveland is over.

However, the Cleveland Browns General Manager Andrew Berry responded to questions asked about whether the franchise did the Watson trade behind Baker’s back.

Andrew Berry responded by saying,We were transparent with our intentions with his reps, That being said, I think we can all understand how Baker feels. Sometimes, things in the NFL — whether it’s team-related, coach-related, player-related, they may not work out.”

He added, “Baker is a competitive and driven young man who has had success as a quarterback and will continue to have success as a quarterback, so (I) definitely understand it.”

With that being said, there is no doubt that both the team and Baker are looking to part ways with each other, but there haven’t been good offers received by the Franchise for him yet.

“Backup quarterback, for us, will always be a priority”- Andrew Berry, as Baker Mayfield continues to look elsewhere

The notion is clear in Cleveland that Deshaun Watson will be the starting quarterback for them in the upcoming season. However, it doesn’t feel like Baker will stay there to be a backup for Deshan.

As a result, the Browns signed Jacoby Brisset to be the backup quarterback, until Deshaun is cleared to play for his new franchise.

Talking about the backup quarterback role in the franchise, GM Andrew Berry said, “Backup quarterback, for us, will always be a priority just because the way that performance at that position goes, oftentimes (it) defines your season.”

Berry added, “Just like you want to be insulated, whether it’s through injury or lack of availability at other positions, it really is the same thing at quarterback. Jacoby is an individual who is very talented, he’s seasoned, he’s played in a number of different offenses and he’s been called into action in several situations, and several unique situations and has performed well.”

It will be interesting to see how things pan out in Cleveland, as Deshaubn might miss some games at the start of the season due to suspension, and Baker is certain to leave.
