The Dallas Cowboys are restructuring contracts for some of their star players ahead of the 2022 season
The Dallas Cowboys are doing everything possible to get back under the salary cap before the start of the 2022 NFL season. The team are currently $20 million over the cap over the projected $208 million ceiling for 2022.
Hence, the Cowboys are now attempting to bring down their salary cap and have now found some relief. The NFC East division team have restructured contracts for their big-name players.
It now remains to be seen whether the players agree to the team’s decision. Earlier this week, Dallas DE DeMarcus Lawrence cast doubt over his future with the franchise when he refused to agree to a pay cut. Lawrence put pen to paper on a five-year contract extension worth $105 million in 2019.
Dak Prescott and Zack Martins to help Cowboys bring down salary cap?
Dak Prescott signed a $160 million contract with the Cowboys last season. The two-time Pro Bowler may now have to take a pay cut with the team overboard the salary cap.
According to reports, the Cowboys have converted most of Prescott’s $20 million base salary this term into a signing bonus to spread the hit over future years for the QB. This has managed to create wiggle room with a $15 million chunk of cap room for this season.
On the other hand, the team are also looking to save money on guard Zack Martins. The 31-year-old can save the team another $7 million if he accepts his restructured contract.
In total, the team Cowboys can save around $22 million by restructuring the deals for Martins and Prescott. However, it remains to be seen whether the players will be happy to take a pay cut for the sake of the franchise.
