New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick has surely seen it throughout his NFL career. On one hand, where he has been extensively criticized for his moves. The other aspect is that Bill has also been silencing his critics in the most outrageous way possible. However, with the Patriots looking like a much-depleted side since Week 1 of the 2022-23 season, Colin Cowherd has serious doubts about him turning into the ‘next’ Gregg Popovich.
Just like Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots has seen success with Tom Brady, Popovich too has had the same success in NBA with Tim Duncan. But the problem with these two legendary coaches has been the issues they have had with modern-day players. Result of which, their respective squads are left short-handed in the current (upcoming) season.
Cowherd quoted on The Volume podcast, “So, we wanna give Bill Belichick all the credit for being a genius. He has turned into Gregg Popovich. He is so pot-in into his culture and believe system that the game is now quickly pivoting away from what Bill’s capable of doing – which is communication on a regular basis with the Quarterback, the ability to draft wide receiver talent, having an offensive sensibility.”
Is Bill Belichick really becoming into the next Gregg Popovich?
After the departure of Brady, Bill Belichick found his comfort in Mac Jones and even led his team to the playoffs last time around. But some of those very decisions taken in the past are coming to haunt the veteran Head Coach.
Itis surprisinge in knowing that the uncharacteristic spending spree in 2021 has left Bill with fewer options in 2022. Justifying the same, the Patriots could not add any WRs and linebackers in the offseason.
Cowherd added, “I watched the Patriot vs Dolphins game – and it was painful. They (New England) had a deep ball laid that was completed but this idea that a coach is a coach is absolutely…utterly ridiculous.”
After talking about the arrogance of successful coaches, Cowherd compared Bill Belichick to Gregg Popovich as the Spurs now have the lowest predictive win ratio heading into the 2022-23 season.
With Popovich not being able to hang onto the likes of Kawhi Leonard and Dejounte Murray in the modern-era Cowherd warned Bill Belichick to not follow the same path.
