The #1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by Cleveland Browns, Baker Mayfield was waived by the Carolina Panthers on Monday. With misery all set to hit him, the 27-year-old Quarterback was acquired by Los Angeles Rams to fill in the shoes of Matthew Stafford, who is placed on the injury reserve, throughout the remainder of 2022-23 season.
Having being eliminated from the playoff race, the defending champions still have five more games to go in the regular season. Moreover, both their backup – John Wolford and third-string Quarterback Bryce Perkins have failed to prove themselves. That is just why Los Angeles Rams turned toward Baker. However, Rams are also aware that if Mayfield signs with another team this offseason, they could receive a compensatory pick in return.
Dam Schefter made everyone aware via his tweet, “Former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield was claimed on waivers today by the Los Angeles Rams, per league sources. The Rams now inherit the remaining $1.35 million on Mayfield’s contract. Mayfield is expected to fly to LA by tonight and could play Thursday night vs. the Raiders.”
Baker Mayfield will not earn more, rather his remaining $1.35 Million will only be paid by the Los Angeles Rams, for whom winning all of their games makes no difference.
While this can give Baker Mayfield a chance to get the attraction from different teams and is indeed a shocking move. Yet there is no denying that the defending champs have hit the ‘desperation’ phase whilst closing out the current regular season.
