Indianapolis Colts offensive woes have been all over the place and out in open in the 2022-23 season. Salt was added to their wounds when veteran QB – Matt Ryan sustained a Grade 2 shoulder separation against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. This resulted in coach Frank Reich opting for Sam Ehlinger to replace Ryan, but this comes with a twist.
This injury to Matt Ryan will rule him out of game-action and practice for the entire week. However, this change in the primary position for the Colts is done for the remainder of the season and not just the coming week. In simpler terms Sam Ehlinger has been promoted to #1 QB position, replacing Matt Ryan for good.
“Extremely difficult decision given the respect and admiration that we have for Matt Ryan, given what he’s brought here,” Reich said Monday, as quoted by ESPN. “He is a pro’s pro. This guy is special. We all know at the quarterback position that our poor production on offense is not on one person. It’s not on Matt Ryan. But we also know, as head coach and quarterback, it doesn’t matter. I’m judged on wins and losses. Quarterbacks are judged on points and turnovers. We understand that’s how it is in this league. Matt Ryan will be a pro.”
The 37-year-old Quarterback has been all over the place for the Indianapolis Colts in this season. Matt Ryan has thrown the most interception in the 2022-23 season, through seven games. Moreover, he has fumbled 11 times, losing three. Even during the game against the Titan, he threw 2 interceptions, one of which returned for a TouchDown by Andrew Adams.
Matt Ryan led Colts are 29th in scoring, averaging 16.1 points. Interestingly the contest against the Titans was the third contest wherein this spoken off team scoring less than 12 points. Will Sam be able to bring about a positive change? Remains to be seen.
