Many expected Baker Mayfield’s predetermined short-term stint with the Los Angeles Rams to unfold in the same manner as what we previously saw with Carolina Panthers. While many had lost their faith with this former #1 pick, Baker was keen to display his potential and what he could do, if a coach trusts him.
Sean McVay, who was without his #1 QB – Matthew Stafford, trusted Baker Mayfield in the clutch moments. Coming from behind, the defending champions won 17-16, breaking their 6-game losing streak in emphatic form. Moreover, Mayfield’s heroics seems to have got the top spot in his new team.
Originally reported by Greg Beacham of the Associated Press, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay urged Baker Mayfield to be his #1 QB throughout the remaining games in the 2022-23 season. Giving this Quarterback four more games to prove just why he can be a franchise starter.
Baker Mayfield’s heroics fetches him the starter role at Rams
With 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the 27-year-old QB found Van Jefferson for a 23-yard TouchDown. To get there, Mayfield managed an eight-play, 98-yard drive that took more than 1:30 to complete. That TD pass would seal the 16-17 victory for the reigning Super Bowl Champs.
Assuming that the Rams win all of their remaining games, the playoff dream is fundamentally over for this team. Give that these remaining games is a chance for all the stars on the Rams to showcase just what they are capable of, Mayfield could earn his ‘lost’ respect back.
Given that over the course of his career, Mayfield has thrown for 15,668 yards, 99 touchdowns and 62 interceptions. Can we see him have his breakout year anytime soon? Remains to be seen.
