New England decided to trade Stephon Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers have recently announced that they have secured the trade of Stephon Gilmore from the New England Patriots. The deal will also include a 2023 6th round draft pick from the Panthers which will be sent to the Patriots.
As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Patriots were not able to agree terms for a restructured contract and were set to release Gilmore. The Panthers then came calling to seize the opportunity and sign him ahead of the NFL Week 5.
Gilmore has grown up in South Carolina and joining his hometown franchise will surely embark him to perform better than ever.
Why was Stephon Gilmore being released?
As stated earlier they failed to agree upon a restructured contract for the NFL star. Moreover, his injuries could’ve played a big part in it as well. Gilmore suffered a partial torn his quads in the 2020-21 season’s game 15 and has been out ever since.
He is now 31 and coming off his worst year as a player since his NFL debut. A long absence from the game at this age can play a crucial role in his performance and confidence. Gilmore will have to be hungrier than ever to make an impact with the Panthers.
Before his injury, Gilmore was a very active and dynamic player which could have substantially changes after his injury. Gilmore will only be able to play after the week 6 of this season for the Panthers. It will be interesting to see how the 31 year old performs upon his return to the NFL.
