Cincinnati Bengals are trying hard to find their perfect groove in the 2022-23season, but things haven’t gone consistently in their favor. To make matters worse one of their top defensive players is potentially ruled out for the remainder of the season. Chidobe Awuzie is believed to have suffered a torn ACL in his right knee.
The same happened in Cincinnati Bengals shocking loss against the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night. Chidobe Awuzie went down in the second quarter of the game and headed straight for the locker room using crutches, with a black protective brace on his right leg. As soon as he went down, the entire Bengals team, along with Lou Anarumo knew that their marquee star is in trouble.
Bengals coach Zac Taylor quickly informed the media after the game that Chidobe Awuzie has suffered a serious injury.
How important Chidobe Awuzie has been for Cincinnati Bengals?
To bring everyone on the same page, Chidobe Awuzie has been one of the Cincinnati Bengals’ top players since signing a three-year deal worth around $22 million during 2021 free agency. The 27-year-old has started 21 games in the last two seasons and emerged as the team’s No. 1 cornerback.
To add to his importance in this unit, as per NFL Next Gen Stats, Chidobe was fourth among all qualifying cornerbacks in completion percentage below expectation at -13.9%. Safe to say as all eyes were secured by Quarterback Joe Burrow, Chidobe Awuzie’s defensive efforts were pretty much out shadowed.
That being said, the Cincinnati Bengals have made a slow start in the 2022-23 regular season, but have managed to slowly pull themselves back on track. This was just the reason why their most recent loss was all the more shocking. Being one win behind Baltimore Ravens where would Bengals finish in the AFC North (current 2nd), remains to be seen.
