Before the start of 2022-23 season, San Francisco 49ers and its fanbase expected Trey Lance to be their main-man, bringing them out of crisis. The No. 3 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft was chosen first ahead of Jimmy Garoppolo to lead the team, as the Niners expected to reach the same heights they did couple of seasons ago.
However, things went haywire for Trey Lance as he has been rehabbing a broken ankle which he sustained nearly three months ago, this injury to him too place in Week 2. After which Garoppolo led the side until their most recent showdown against the Miami Dolphins.
Trey has often been complimented for dealing positively with his injury, as he was ruled out for the reason of the 2022-23 season. Moreover, recently coach Kyle Shanahan shut down all claims of the young and charismatic QB returning to action even if the team reached deep into the playoffs.
While Trey Lance will not return for the San Francisco 49ers in the entirety of 2022-23 season, Brock Purdy, who became the first ever Quarterback to register a win against Tom Brady in his first-professional start, will be leading the side.
“No, he can’t,” Shanahan said about the possibility of activating Lance again while at the podium. “He did eventually elaborate to Tim Kawakami of The Athletic about the possibility of a playoff return. From what I’ve been told, no. He’s not physically able to. If he could, hell yeah. But right now, I’ve been told no on that.”
Will Niners find themselves with a new hero in the form of Burdy, rather than Trey Lance? Remains to be seen.
