Former No.1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Baker Mayfield has made his move, in the 2022-23 season itself, to play for a new team – the defending champions, Los Angeles Rams. Aware of it, but don’t know how did this take place? Then this story is your one stop destination.
This move of Baker Mayfield happened via NFL Waiver Wire, which allows some teams in the league to release players in hopes of assigning them to the practice squad. However, the process has a different layer to it, this is done in order for those left out players, who haven’t been selected by any team in the 53-team roster, to be placed on these waivers and then clear waivers.
Now who is placed on these waiver wire? players who have been released by a team and have less than four years of experience in the league. An official year of NFL experience requires at least six games where said player is on a 53-man roster. NFL players with more than four seasons of service time are officially released or can sign with the team’s practice squad.
Cleveland Browns had opted to move on from former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick only to acquire Deshaun Watson.
Carolina Panthers had acquired Baker Mayfield from Cleveland Browns but due to his lackluster and inconsistent performance, he was waived off. The Los Angeles Rams, who have their #1 QB – Matthew Stafford sidelined, claimed Baker off waiver on Tuesday. He’ll only be with them until the end of the 2022-23 regular season.
Now Mayfield will neither be paid on every game basis nor will have a different contract listed for himself. Rather the reigning Super Bowl Champions will only pay him $1.35 Million left on his current contract.
