It is hard to imagine the current Dallas Cowboys without Dak Prescott. Although fans would have seen a glimpse of it in the 2022-23 season when Cooper Rush took charge during the former’s injury woes, which took place in Week 1. As Prescott’s approaching his return in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions, let us look at how he made a name for himself in Dallas.
This franchise has always been known as the home of elite Quarterbacks. So, when Dak Prescott was made available in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Cowboys acquired him to develop behind Tony Romo. Interestingly the Cowboys failed to trade to eventually select Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook, they went in for Prescott in the fourth round (135th overall pick).
Since 2016 onwards, Dak Prescott was selected as the starting Quarterback for this elite franchise. After which he represented the Cowboys for every single game till 2019. In 2020, however, the Cowboys saw themselves switching to four different Quarterbacks with Andy Dalton taking up the starting job (the most) in 9 games, whereas Prescott started in only 5 of them.
After Dak Prescott suffered from a broken thumb in the team’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cooper Rush did a formidable job to keep the team in the playoff hunt after leading them to four consecutive wins. Although Rush never had a standout performance, but he always managed to hold onto the offensive end, doing just enough for the defense to make the difference.
Now with Detroit Lions being lined up for Week 7 – Dak Prescott is all set to lead his team once again. Given that they are 4-2 in the 2022-23 season, in a division that consists of the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles, Prescott needs to be out with his A-Game, if the Cowboys are to fight hard for the top spot.
There are no doubts that Prescott has a better distribution ability than Rush. But one has to be aware that Dak will consistently be compared to his back up QB in every single game from here on out. Will we witness why the Dallas have enabled such trust in him? Remains to be seen.
