Carolina Panthers acquired Baker Mayfield with an idea to change the face of the franchise for 2022-23 season. However, their start in the current season hasn’t gone as per planned. Having been haunted by injuries as of late, their marquee QB-Baker Mayfield too has been dealing with an apparent an ankle injury since Week 5.
With Steve Wilks already indicating PJ Walker will be starting the team’s next game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacob Wason to resume backup duties, fans were shocked to witness Baker Mayfield at the training facility, moving pretty well this week.
While many speculate that Mayfield’s presence and limited time practicing could indicate that he’s potentially forcing the interim head coach into a change of plans providing there’s no soreness in the coming days. But an official word is still awaited on a player who has an incredible amount of pain tolerance.
Baker Mayfield’s official game status in Week 7 vs Tom Brady
Mayfield might not be in his career best form but he has the same desire to be on the field as what he was in the years prior. Having played through a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder from Week 2 onwards with the Cleveland Browns last season, do not be surprised if Mayfield steps on the field against Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7.
Wilks had previously stated that he won’t be putting Baker Mayfield in the risk of fire, if he’s not at his 100%. So, it does look like the Quarterback could be witnessing this action from the side-lines only. However, in desperate times, one is known to take indecisive actions – Baker Mayfield’s career is hanging in the balance, which could lead to the signal-caller risking his own health by getting back out onto the gridiron ahead of time. But will Steve Wilks allow this to be the case? Remains to be seen.
