Jimmy Garoppolo has returned as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers following the injury to Trey Lance.
Trey Lance was named head coach Kyle Shanahan’s starting quarterback for the next San Francisco 49ers season, after months of speculation. Expectations had Jimmy Garoppolo leaving San Francisco, but he stayed on as Trey Lance’s cover.
Lance, who was drafted by the 49ers’ drafted last year, entered this season feeling prepared and ready to take over as the team’s starter. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and Trey Lance was injured in Week 2 against the Seahawks and is gone for the year. This means that Jimmy Garoppolo has returned to his starting quarterback position for the team.
While facing the Seahawks, Jimmy Garoppolo completed 13 of 21 throws for 154 yards and a touchdown. There was also a touchdown run by Garoppolo. After that night, many fans and experts started to think he is a better fit for this team than Lance because of his great performance.
Chris Broussard on the show First Things First also stated that the 49ers are a better team with Jimmy Garoppolo. He said, “Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes, they are better with Jimmy G. Nick, you picked them to get to the Super Bowl now they have a legitimate chance of doing that, don’t come off that pick, do not, they had no chance of getting to the Super Bowl with Trey Lance.”
There is common sense around the league that the player on the 49ers are pretty much happy with Garoppolo being their quarterback than Trey Lance. This was further supported by Chris Broussard who also believes the same.
Chris Broussard said, “Look one day he (Lance) may be better than Jimmy G there’s no doubt about that. but right now Jimmy G is the best quarterback for the 49ers, you know, that was on that roster all right and it was evident right away yesterday. Trey Lance has played five quarters, okay there was a monsoon, it’s not the first time guys played in driving rainstorms, but he had played five quarters and had failed to produce a touchdown.“
He added, “Jimmy G goes in after zero reps last week in practice after spending training camp going with the trainers oh away from the team while the real football players are practicing he goes in after all of that and on his second possession throws the touchdown all right throws a touchdown.”
Broussard concluded with, “Beyond all that Nick, you saw the reaction of the players they were hugging, jumping on Jimmy G at the end of the game, late in the game, like he had hit a 35-foot buzzer-beater in the Western Conference Finals. I mean it was ridiculous…”
Jimmy Garoppolo can cement his place in the league if he is able to lead the 49ers to another Super Bowl. This is a big player for him, as he would love to continue being the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers.
On the other, Trey Lance will be recovering from the injury, and he can only pray for the best. Hopefully, this isn’t the end for Lance in San Francisco, as he is a quality young quarterback who has huge potential.
