NFL trade rumours: Latest on Jaire Alexander and Packers’ contract negotiations

Published by

The Green Bay Packers are keen on tying down star cornerback Jaire Alexander despite the uncertainty around QB Aaron Rodgers.

Earlier on Sunday, reports claimed that Jaire Alexander and the Green Bay Packers resumed talks of a contract extension for the star cornerback. It is believed that the Packers board want to keep the 25-year old on a long-term deal.

Alexander was the first-round draft pick for the Packers in 2018 and he is heading into the fifth year of his rookie contract. He is guaranteed a whopping $13,294,000 this season before his contract runs out, so he has plenty of leverage. Therefore, it’s unlikely that he won’t put pen to paper on anything that doesn’t give him a lucrative signing bonus.

Green Bay to offer Jaire Alexander new deal?

The Packers, who are already over the salary cap, must find a viable solution for one of their best defensive players on the roster. With a significant signing bonus, the Packers have the possibility to bring down Alexander’s cap number by a few million in 2022 with a long-term extension. Reports claim that his agents met with the team recently to negotiate a deal.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rappaport claimed that contract negotiations usually don’t take place at this time of the year but if they do, the franchise generally wants to keep the player for a lengthy period. “Usually the extensions take place in the spring or into the summer. But this is certainly someone the Packers want to keep around for a very long time,” he explained.

Alexander earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honours in 2020 after a rather impressive season with the Packers. However, he was then sidelined for much of the 2021 season with a shoulder injury and he managed to feature only in five games.

He did play in the Packers’ Divisional Round defeat to San Francisco but was used sparingly throughout the course of the campaign.
