The San Francisco 49ers are keeping Jimmy Garoppolo and are restructuring his contract for a team-friendly deal ahead of the new season.
A few weeks ago it was announced that Trey Lance will be the new starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers. He will be taking the place of Jimmy Garoppolo, as the latter was set to leave the 49ers.
However, now it doesn’t look like the 49ers will be keeping Jimmy Garoppolo for the next season. There weren’t enough suitors for Jimmy G in the market so it is a wise deal for the 49ers. Despite Trey Lance being expected to start throughout the 49ers, having Garoppolo will serve as a safety blanket for the 49ers.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN: Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers agreed to a restructured one-year contract that will keep the QB in San Francisco this season, per sources. The contract contains no-trade and no-tag clauses, assuring Garoppolo will remain in SF this season and have the freedom to leave in 2023.
He added: Comp update: Jimmy Garoppolo’s one-year restructured deal is worth $6.5 million in base, fully guaranteed, per sources. He has another total of $500k in roster bonuses. He also has playtime bonuses that can boost it another nearly $9M. So, one year, $7M, up to just shy of $16M.
Through this restructured contract, the 49ers will be able to keep Jimmy G on a team-friendly deal. Moreover, they could still trade their former QB1 in the season if a good opportunity arises.
